‎ANC Loses Electoral Court Battle Over Candidate Lists Ahead of Local Government Elections

‎The African National Congress (ANC) has lost its legal challenge against the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) over the submission of councillor candidate information ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections.

‎

‎The Electoral Court in Bloemfontein dismissed the ANC’s application concerning candidate information that was captured on the IEC’s online nomination system but was not formally submitted as final before the 5pm deadline on 28 August. The dispute affected candidates in six municipalities.

‎

‎The ANC had argued that technical difficulties with the IEC’s online system prevented its officials from completing the final submission process. The party maintained that the relevant candidate information and supporting documentation had already been uploaded before the deadline.

‎

‎The IEC disputed the ANC’s position, arguing that the system was operational and that capturing or uploading candidate information did not amount to a completed final submission.

‎

‎Following the judgment, the ANC said it had taken note of the Electoral Court’s decision and called on its members, leaders and supporters to remain calm and disciplined.

‎

‎The party also urged its structures to refrain from public commentary that could prejudice or interfere with the ongoing legal process.

‎

‎The ruling comes as the IEC proceeds with preparations for the 4 November 2026 Local Government Elections, with the candidate lists forming an important part of the electoral timetable.
