‎Charges Against Fannie Masemola Withdrawn as Ramaphosa Set to Discuss His Future

‎The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has formally instructed prosecutors to withdraw the charges against suspended National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola.
‎
‎National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Advocate Andy Mothibi made the decision following a review of the case, including evidence gathered by the Independent Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), a Case Assessment Panel report and an assessment by independent senior counsel. The NPA concluded that there were no reasonable prospects of a successful prosecution on the Public Finance Management Act charges.

‎Masemola had faced charges linked to the controversial Medicare24 SAPS healthcare tender. President Cyril Ramaphosa subsequently placed him on precautionary suspension following his appearance in court. 
‎
‎Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has welcomed the withdrawal of the charges and indicated that President Ramaphosa is expected to meet with Masemola to discuss the way forward. Cachalia said the President, who appoints the National Police Commissioner, would engage Masemola about his future. 
‎
‎The NPA has also said the Case Assessment Panel report will be made available to the IDAC Judge to examine how the prosecution team assessed the evidence, enrolled the case and applied the law, including whether any misconduct occurred. Masemola is still expected to appear in court for the formal withdrawal of the case.
