DADA MORERO: ‘MEN MUST STEP UP’ AS JOHANNESBURG MOBILISES AGAINST GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE
Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero has called on men and communities to take a stronger stand against gender-based violence (GBV), saying the fight must continue beyond one-day campaigns.
Morero was speaking after joining men from across Johannesburg at the Men For Her Picket at Constitution Hill, where participants gathered to speak out against violence against women and children.
Morero said communities have a shared responsibility to protect women and create safer neighbourhoods.
“Every movement starts somewhere. What matters is that we continue to organise, speak out and refuse to accept violence against women and children as normal,” Morero said.
He said the gathering was an opportunity for men to respond to the experiences of women, mothers, daughters and sisters through action rather than silence or indifference.
Morero also linked the campaign to broader social challenges affecting families and communities, calling on men to take greater responsibility in addressing these issues.
The mayor further said the gathering provided an opportunity to call for a constitutional review, with the aim of strengthening legal protections for women and children, ensuring accountability for perpetrators and advancing equality and justice.
Morero stressed that the campaign against GBV should not be treated as a once-off initiative, saying sustained mobilisation and community action are needed until South Africa is free from gender-based violence.
