Kenny Kunene Promises to Write Off Johannesburg Residents’ Municipal Debt Within 100 Days

‎Johannesburg, South Africa — Patriotic Alliance (PA) Johannesburg mayoral candidate Kenny Kunene has promised to write off residents’ municipal debt within 100 days if the party takes control of the City of Johannesburg following the 2026 Local Government Elections.

‎Kunene outlined the PA’s plans for the city, placing municipal debt among the key issues the party says it would address if elected to govern Johannesburg.

‎The pledge comes as political parties prepare their campaigns ahead of the 2026 local government elections, with service delivery, municipal finances, electricity, water and the cost of living expected to remain major issues for voters.

‎Kunene’s proposed 100-day debt write-off would represent a significant change in the city’s approach to outstanding municipal accounts. The practical details, including which categories of debt would qualify and how the policy would be funded and implemented, would need to be clarified.

‎The PA is presenting its Johannesburg plans as part of its campaign to gain control of the metropolitan municipality.
