‎EFF leader Julius Malema has been given until 30 September 2026 to apologise in the National Assembly after being found guilty of breaching Parliament’s Code of Ethical Conduct and Disclosure of Members’ Interests.

‎The Powers and Privileges Committee has granted Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema a new deadline to deliver an apology in the National Assembly following a long-running disciplinary matter dating back to 2019.
‎
‎The matter stems from remarks Malema made during interviews conducted by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) in 2019, where he questioned Judge Elias Matojane about a ruling involving former Finance Minister Trevor Manuel.
‎
‎Malema questioned the judge about a judgment in which Manuel was ordered to be paid R500,000.
‎
‎The Joint Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests subsequently found Malema guilty of violating Parliament’s Code of Ethical Conduct and Disclosure of Members’ Interests.
‎
‎Powers and Privileges Committee Chairperson Weziwe Tikana-Gxotiwe said the matter had been outstanding for several years and that Malema had previously been instructed to apologise in the House by 27 February 2026.
‎
‎“The matter of honourable Malema is a long outstanding matter,” Tikana-Gxotiwe said, explaining that Malema had been informed that arrangements could be made with the Speaker for him to deliver the apology at an appropriate time.
‎
‎She also warned that failure or refusal by a member to comply with a rule, order or resolution of the National Assembly could result in a finding of contempt of Parliament.
‎
‎Malema did not meet the February deadline after the EFF took the matter on review to the Western Cape High Court.
‎
‎The legal challenge was dismissed in May 2026, clearing the way for Parliament to proceed with the disciplinary process.
‎
‎Following the court outcome, a new deadline of 30 September 2026 was agreed for Malema to make the required apology in the National Assembly.
‎
‎The latest development keeps the long-running dispute firmly on Parliament’s agenda, with attention now turning to whether the EFF leader will comply with the new deadline.
