Mantashe Challenges Freedom Park Resident: “Who Is Giving Your Grandchildren the Child Support Grant?”
ANC National Chairperson Gwede Mantashe has highlighted the African National Congress’ social welfare record while engaging residents during a door-to-door campaign in Freedom Park, Johannesburg.
Mantashe said the ANC would continue to acknowledge its mistakes, explain its shortcomings and present voters with clear remedial actions as it seeks to regain public confidence.
During his engagement with one Freedom Park resident, Mantashe asked whether the resident’s grandchildren were receiving the Child Support Grant.
Mantashe: “Do your grandchildren get a child support grant?”
Resident: “Yes.”
Mantashe: “Who is giving them that?”
The exchange appeared aimed at reminding residents of the ANC-led government’s role in providing social grants to millions of South Africans, while making a broader appeal for support ahead of the upcoming local government elections.
Mantashe’s engagements form part of the ANC’s grassroots campaign strategy, as the party seeks to reconnect with communities, listen to residents’ concerns and convince voters that it can address the challenges facing municipalities and improve service delivery.
The ANC chairperson has maintained that the party must be honest with voters about its mistakes while clearly outlining how it intends to correct them.
