ZUMA ORDERS PROBE INTO ALLEGED MK PARTY CANDIDATE LIST MANIPULATION, DISBANDS TASK TEAM

‎MK Party President Jacob Zuma has ordered an investigation into allegations that legitimate councillor candidates were removed from party lists submitted to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) and replaced with other names.

‎

‎In a media statement dated 9 September 2026, the MK Party said the allegations were being treated with the “utmost seriousness”, warning that any manipulation or abuse of organisational processes would not be tolerated.

‎

‎The party said the investigation would establish the facts and determine whether anyone was responsible for wrongdoing. Those found accountable could face action in accordance with the party’s rules and procedures.

‎

‎As part of the intervention, Zuma ordered the immediate removal of Zandile Hlophe-Mkhwanazi and Sibonelo Maphumulo from the National Party Liaison Committee, pending the outcome of the necessary processes.

‎

‎Zuma also disbanded the Presidential Task Team with immediate effect.

‎

‎The MK Party has further announced Apostle Mxolisi Phakathi as its new mayoral candidate for the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, replacing Hlophe-Mkhwanazi.

‎

‎The developments come ahead of the 4 November 2026 Local Government Elections, with the alleged candidate-list dispute creating tensions within the party.

‎

‎Zuma has called on MK Party members and structures to put the dispute behind them, unite behind the party's candidates and focus on the upcoming elections.

‎
